In Texas, a 55 years old man Craig Lewis was admitted to the Texas Heart Institute. Craig was diagnosed with a life threatening disease called Amyloidosis. When a substance named amyloid starts forming in the body it becomes a life threatening disease. It is a type of abnormal protein that is produced in the bone marrow and can be deposited in any tissue or organ.
Craig was fortunate enough that two doctors, Dr. Billy Cohn and Dr. Bud Frazier came up with the idea of what they called continuous flow device that enables the blood to circulate without a heart. Such a miraculous device it was that the very day the doctors detached his heart and attached it with the machine, Craig woke up and talked to them.
By intricately tying together two ventricular assist devices, the device is formed and replaces the entire heart. It whirls and circulates the blood in the body. Dr. Cohn who is an expert surgeon, discoverer and scientist has done much work on technologies to repair the heart and the best one till now is the Left Ventricular Assist Device, also termed as LVADs.
When Dr. Cohn and Dr. Frazier worked together for the discovery on LVADs, they tried their device on 70 calves, all of them acted normally, related with each other and yet they all showed a flat line on an EKG and had no heartbeat.
