Pakistan is an Islamic country and there is a less room for the freedom of having the beliefs of your choice other than the standard one. You can’t even conceptualize an ideal life here if you are a minority member, Hindu, Christian, Ahmedi or even having no believes. The trouble atheists face in this country is somehow tougher than those of the people belongs to some religion. So to those troubles, how the free people face in their routines, I wanted to make that the central issue. This will make you understand that there is not the only one or two sources, the human being can take the lessons of basic values from. So if you are an atheist, and unfortunately a Pakistani atheist, you have to worry.
Don’t argue on believes!!
Although that doesn’t guarantee your safety but you can escape the danger to some extent to not to indulge with any of the debate on believes. People will ask you about your believes and want you to have your stance, you can simply redirect the debate to other issues and should not let other know about your believes other than the people of your trust.
Being an atheist, the bigger obstacle of living peacefully might be your family. You might have a very conservative religious family to bind you with the inherited and rotted believes you never got satisfied with. If it is safe you think, you can share with your parents and the sibs you believe the most. That can half your burden of guilty the society always provides you with the complimentary “Log kya kahengy” argument. This situation might lead you to the extreme behaviors you have to be known in advance. Recognizing the problem is actually getting towards its solution. So understand yourself, don’t let yourself heading towards any kind of identity crisis, or irrelevancy with respect of the surroundings. You will be discouraged, ignored and the harsh reaction from the conservative factions of the society, the challenge is to face those problems with much calculated reaction.
Don’t angry your family members, always keep them into your confidence, they are the people, if not so conservative, will give you the due space to your beliefs.
Keep yourself busy with other ideas
Believe me you may have bulk of opportunities to have fun in your life, just discover those and keep yourself busy with the activities fascinates you. If you are an artist, journalist or a writer, or even a good reader, you are lucky to have so much energy for recreational purposes.
Find the friends of your thoughts
Finding friends of the same thoughts is now not so difficult in Pakistan. There are so many online communities, and the social circles you may find around. Get opportunity to hang out with the friends that thinks alike, it will have a great impact in your social life and will let you out of the isolation you might get into. Search for the Atheist alliance international if it suites you thoughts.
Educate yourself about the Blasphemy law in Pakistan
I would recommend my atheist friends, not to go for an adventure like anything may cause you in trouble. It is advised to please read about the blasphemy laws rules the country and what are the practical implications of those laws in the conservative country like Pakistan. Asia Bibi case, Mashal Khan murder, Bloggers abduction and the number of other incidents have a good lesson for you to not get into any trouble where people find the little reasons to behead the accused in the name of religion.
You might be finding for a good nightlife
Still, that doesn’t mean that you are in a country that has no acceptability of the colors of nightlife. In cities like Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, and other cosmopolitan cities, in lavish hotels or in the private parties in different factions of the society, you may find a perfect nightlife here. Now comes the point that what class you belong to. If you can afford a good life being in Pakistan, you are able to get your slice of entertainment in nights and days. In Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi, the five and four star hotels can provide you every possible service to get you any quality and class of a drink you want. But if you are not much well to afford this, you must have to find the other options anyway. It’s debatable.
Norms you may adapt will not affect your beliefs
To be an atheist, you will not go to fast in Ramadan of course, but how will you hide this from your colleagues and the friends always cares for your fast and Prayers more than theirs. You may pretend or simply say the truth, but to keep in mind the possible consequence you might face. But there are festivals like Eid, Milaad, Marriage ceremony rituals, and the other events round the year, from the festivals like these, you can connect with different communities and new friends to have better connections in life. You may adapt the norms which are least in collide with your beliefs, that will have your good space in society with the at least some acceptability.
