Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari on Friday called for the country to adopt legislation that must make under-18 marriages illegal, as the debate on the legislation to ban child marriage in Pakistan is still on the discussion table.
UAE marriage age is 18, Indonesia is 18 & Turkey is also 18. Are they not Muslim countries? In Sindh where marriage age is 18, we saw how law stopped an adult marrying a 10 year old! Every 20 minutes a girl dies in Pakistan as a result of underage pregnancy. #EndChildMarriage

In his tweet, the Chairman PPP asked why in various countries the minimum age of a person to marry is 18 years, while further inquiring aren’t they Muslim countries. Bilawal further stated that, in Pakistan a girl dies every 20 minutes as a result of underage pregnancy.
The Child Marriage Restraint (Amendment) Bill, 2018 was already passed by the Senate Standing Committee on Human Rights, however both the ministers of the ruling party (PTI) and the opposition are still polarised on the age specificity and other issues in the bill.
