Hijaab Rafee and Laiba Mubashar, both 18 year-old students from the Lahore Grammar School, have been selected for a prestigious international youth conference – the Global Youth Model United Nations (GYMUN) – being held from July 19 to 22 in Kuala Lumpur. The conference centers around the well-needed global goals of youth empowerment and global peace. The GYMUN 2019 celebrates the youthful spirit and viewpoint of global leaders and diplomats. Participants from rival nations like India and Pakistan will be sitting side by side to celebrate the zeal a diplomat reflects. Committees of the event include DISEC, IMF, UNESCO, UN Women and Crisis Committee.
When Hijaab was asked about how she feels on this achievement of hers and on representing Pakistan, she said “I believe that GYMUN will provide a platform for youth from all over the globe to engage in vigorous and riveting discussions, giving the delegates the best possible competition. At GYMUN 2019, I will be chairing the Crisis Committee, primarily because it is an amalgamation of both political and humanitarian issues and having knowledge on both. I believe I can offer my best advice in this committee.”
About her future aspirations, she said, “Though I plan on pursuing engineering/medicine, I want to stay connected to world politics and I believe the best way to do that is through MUNs.”
Laiba is also excited about her selection.
“An MUN for me has always been an opportunity to interact with different people whilst effectively debating on the best solutions to problems of global magnitude. Similarly, I feel that GYMUN provides this very same sense of community but in a much more magnified manner. I am excited to serve there as chair for model UNESCO this year.”
Both Hijaab and Laiba seem already accomplished and blessed in their lives but with the kind of goals they have in their minds, it seems sky is the only limit to these adept ambassadors of Pakistan. In this age and time, where hardly a good news gets out of Pakistan and most of the times the country makes news either about deadly terrorist attacks or something as heinous and shameful as honor killings, then there comes a news which can illuminate faces with happiness as these two young girls are all set to represent the true and positive image of Pakistan in a reputable global youth conference in Malaysia.
