WASHINGTON DC: President Donald Trump on Friday declared a national emergency in the United States (US) over coronavirus outbreak in the country.
At a White House presser, the US president said that his administration was working to “dramatically increase the availability of tests” for coronavirus affectees.
“We are announcing a new partnership with the private sector to vastly increase and accelerate our capacity to test for the coronavirus,” Trump said. He was joined by representatives Walgreens, CVS, and Quest Diagnostics. He said half a million tests would be available by next week.
The president further stated that he would likely be tested for coronavirus “fairly soon” after having come into contact with several persons reported positive for the novel virus.
The declaration of emergency means that federal aid could be directed to states hit by disasters and health crises, according to the US media. “I am officially declaring a national emergency—two very big words. The action I am taking will open up access to up to $50 billion… and a large amount of money for states, territories and localities,” he added.
